Are you looking for a ideas for your windows in your home? Well, it helps to know what to look for and a little bit about it. When you go shopping for blinds, it will be helpful to you to know what types there are and what they basically do. This will help you to make a better decision when that time comes. I hope that this information will be helpful to you as you shop.
Window blinds have been used as the most popular window treatment for many years now. They have become the “standard” for windows. There are very few who do not or have not had blinds for their windows in their home.
Window blinds are actually thin horizontal slats made of wood, or a faux wood material. They are connected with cords that allow them to hang equally spaced and when closed, they shut out light and insulation, when open, they can direct the light that is coming into the room. There are blinds that are also held together by strips of webbing or another flexible fabric. They are attached to a window or door, usually to the interior side.
The slats, which are horizontal, flat slats, can come in wood, metal or even vinyl. The way that they are attached allows them to be rotated to determine how much light you want to allow in your room. They can rotate up to about 170 degrees to block light or they can be pulled up to reveal an open window.
There are window blinds that can be operated by a small knob that is attached to strings, they are adjusted by twisting a long wand or by pulling a cord; you can also raise and lower the blinds with the cord. There is also a version that is wound on a mechanism that will do both functions using a winding rod.
The most popular types are the vertical wood slats or the faux wood for the budget minded customer. They are great for light dispersion and insulating from either the cold or the heat. Blinds are really great for this reason, so much heat or cold air comes through our windows, blinds work as an insulation barrier, creating a more comfortable atmosphere. Curtains are not able to provide this benefit unless they are lined and always closed.
So many types of blinds to choose from. There are the “slats” which I mentioned earlier are the horizontal, flat slat. They come in the Venetian style, which are typically metal or plastic. There is the Vertical Wood blinds or Bamboo blinds.
Mini-blinds, are a venetian blind with really narrow slats. They were very popular for a time in the 70s and 80s. They are more difficult to clean than the wider versions. But we are in the 21rst century and window blinds are more popular than ever. They look great and are long lasting, keeping their great appearance as long as they are taken care of.
Vertical blinds or track blinds are made with slats of fabric that has been stiffened, or you can get them in plastic or even metal. They hang on a track and can be opened by sliding across the track. They rotate 90 degrees allowing light to pass or they can be slid all the way open to one side of the window or door.
Solid blinds cannot be opened to let light in. They are either up or down. Some things to shop for are the material the blind is made with. The real wood featured window blinds can run more than a typical curtain or similar window treatment. They will need to be custom fitted for each window or door you are covering.
The disadvantage of blinds versus a window treatment such as cellular shades, are they need to be kept free of dust. When dust builds up it can become grimy then you will need to bring them down to clean them. But all in all, window blinds have been a favorite of many and as the quality continues, the pricing gets better, it will continue to be a favorite.
